Congressman Bob Latta (R-Bowling Green) made the following statement as the United States Senate prepares for a Christmas Eve vote on health care reform legislation. “After a month of closed-door, backroom negotiations, Senate Democrat leadership is now preparing for a Christmas Eve vote to pass their health care reform legislation. Following the lead of House Democrat leadership, Senate Democrat leaders composed a bill with no bi-partisan input and did not reveal their final bill until the last minute. Now that we have the details of the Senate Democrat legislation, it comes as no surprise that this bill will cost over $2 trillion dollars, financed with $518 billion in new taxes. Similar to the House Democrat passed bill, this legislation will make dramatic cuts to senior citizens on Medicare, force 10 million people out of their private insurance plans, and raise health care costs across the board. A majority of Americans continue to oppose the health care reform packages brought forth by Congressional Democrat leadership and it is now time to start over with bi-partisan legislation and transparency during the process, just as President Obama called for on the campaign trail last year. Congress should not work under artificial deadlines and cut deals to pass enormous pieces of legislation that will re-write nearly one-sixth of our nation’s economy.” |
