Congressman Latta Statement on Asian Carp Amendment

Washington, D.C., February 18, 2011 | Izzy Santa ((202) 226-4356)
Congressman Bob Latta (R-Bowling Green) issued the following statement in support of Amendment 516 offered by U.S. Representative David Camp (R-MI), which failed on Thursday.  The measure, which was part of a Continuing Resolution, would have shut two shipping locks around Chicago, preventing the further spread of Asian Carp into the Great Lakes.

“It’s unfortunate that the amendment failed, but I am not discouraged in the fight to keep Asian Carp from negatively impacting Ohio.

“As a sportsman, I know firsthand the benefits fishing in Lake Erie bring to Ohio.  The fishing industry brings in $1.8 billion revenues annually to Ohio.  Keeping Asian Carp out of the Great Lakes is imperative to our state’s economic wellbeing and the safety of our anglers and boaters.

“Ohio simply cannot afford the economic detriment that would result if Asian Carp enter the waters of Lake Erie.  We must prevent any further impediments to Ohio's economy and ecosystem,” said Congressman Latta.
