Congressman Bob Latta (R-Bowling Green) today issued the following statement on an amendment to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Reauthorization and Reform Act of 2011 that would block new regulations by the FAA on air shipments of lithium batteries: “Safety for the airline industry is extremely important, but imposing costly and unnecessary regulations on the transport of lithium batteries only cripples America’s manufacturing competitiveness. In the last decade, Ohio has lost over 600,000 manufacturing jobs and failure to pass this amendment would only deepen our state’s jobless numbers. “There are billions of batteries shipped everyday that follow the International Civil Aviation Organization standards for air transport of batteries without any incidents. It does not make any sense to implement regulations that drive up costs, restrict commerce and delay job creation.” The bill will now await action in the Senate. |
