Latta Supports A Balanced Budget Amendment

In preview of today’s Balanced Budget Amendment, H.J.Res. 2, Congressman Bob Latta (R-Bowling Green) issued the following statement:

"For too many years, Washington has lost control over federal spending. Washington’s reckless spending has produced horrific results: $15 trillion in debt – $1.3 in deficit spending and rising – and almost a $48,000 debt burden on every child born today.

"To end Washington’s spending binge and to help America’s hard working taxpayers, small business owners, future generations and seniors is through a balanced budget amendment, which would force future congresses and presidents to stop spending money they don’t have.

"In fact, over 30 consecutive months have passed and the unemployment rate has been at or above 8 percent—the level the president said unemployment would never reach if the “stimulus” was approved. Since the enactment of the “stimulus,” unemployment had not been above 8 percent for this long since the Great Depression.

"The time to act is now. Passage of a balanced budget amendment will ensure American taxpayers that Washington’s spending will get under control.

"In Ohio, every level of government has to balance its budget and the federal government should as well."

Congressman Latta is a co-sponsor of H.J. Res 2.

Sixteen years ago, a Balanced Budget Amendment passed the House with bipartisan support, only to lose by one vote in the U.S. Senate.
