Congressman Latta Urges Senate Democrats to Support the Middle Class Tax Relief and Job Creation Act

Congressman Bob Latta (R-Bowling Green) issued the following statement after he voted for the Middle Class Tax Relief and Job Creation Act, H.R. 3630:

“Today, the House has continued to provide tax-relief for millions of Americans and has ensured that taxes are not raised on families  struggling in this economy, while protecting the Social Security Trust Fund. I urge my colleagues in the Senate to follow in my footsteps and approve the bipartisan House-passed bill that extends the current payroll tax cut, renews and reforms unemployment benefits and ensures seniors continue to have access to Medicare providers.

“This bill reflects areas of common agreement between House Republicans and President Obama. In fact, the President at one time or another has supported 90 percent of this bill.”

What the Middle Class Tax Relief and Job Creation Act Does:

  • Extends for another year the reduction in the Social Security payroll tax. Rep. Latta voted for the extension last December.
  • Prevents a 27.4 percent cut to doctors serving Medicare patients.
  • Renews unemployment benefits for long-term unemployed workers through January 31, 2012.
  • Cuts spending by prohibiting millionaires from receiving unemployment insurance and food stamp benefits.
  • Prolongs the current federal employee pay freeze until 2013.
  • Reduces the maximum weeks of unemployment benefits from 99 to 79 weeks – which President Obama has also proposed – and then finally to 59 weeks.
  • Stops fraud and abuse of the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) program by requiring individuals to provide a valid Social Security number on their tax return in order to claim the credit.
  • Frees up segments of broadcast spectrum for wireless broadband use.
  • Extends the 100 percent bonus-depreciation allowance through 2012.
