In Need of Books for Your Library? Join the Library of Congress’ Surplus Books Program

To help promote literacy, Congressman Bob Latta (R-Bowling Green) is kicking off National Reading Day, January 23, by inviting public libraries in the Fifth Congressional District to participate in the Library of Congress Surplus Books Program. Materials notused by Library of Congress for their permanent collection are available for donation to educational institutions and non-profit organizations.

“With the tough economy and a strained state budget, I understand that expanding book collections in libraries in the Fifth District may be difficult,” said Congressman Latta.  “I highly encourage all libraries to take advantage of this opportunity,” added Latta.

Interested libraries may contact the Washington, D.C. office at (202) 225-6405 to inquire about what books and materials are available. Books are free of charge to recipients.

In 2010, Congressman Latta helped secure books for Lake High School’s book collection through the Surplus Books Program after the devastating tornados that struck Wood County, in addition to supplementing the collections of several other 5th District libraries.

Congressman Latta sent a letter about the program to librarians in the District, a copy of the letter can be found here.
