Latta Applauds Supreme Court Decision Upholding Little Sisters of the Poor's Religious Freedom From Obamacare

Washington, January 24, 2014 | Sarah Criser (202-225-6405)

Congressman Bob Latta (R-Bowling Green) today issued the following statement upon learning the Supreme Court’s decision to continue exemptions from the birth control and reproductive health coverage mandates under Obamacare for religious non-profits.

“As Americans, we are all blessed with fundamental freedoms, including religious liberty,” said Congressman Latta. “Today’s Supreme Court decision is a positive step to ensuring the federal government does not infringe upon these freedoms by requiring contraceptive coverage under Obamacare. As your Congressman, I will do everything in my power to ensure these exemptions are made both permanent and applicable to all persons of faith.”

Under Obamacare, the federal government requires all employers to include contraceptive coverage in health insurance plans – regardless of the groups’ religious beliefs and rights of conscience. The decision extends an injunction for the Little Sisters of the Poor, a Catholic charity run by nuns who opposed the mandates due to religious reasons, and will stand while the case is being considered in lower courts.
