Congressman Bob Latta (R-OH) and French Ambassador Francois Delattre honored World War II veteran and life-long Wyandot resident Clyde Shull at a ceremony held Wednesday at The University of Findlay. The event was part of the Ambassador’s daylong visit to Northwest Ohio, which the Congressman arranged in an effort to showcase the economic, cultural and historic ties France has in the area.

“It is an honor to recognize Clyde for his service to both our community and our country,” said Latta. “He is a true American hero, and we as a nation must never forget the service and sacrifice of his generation. They are truly deserving of the utmost recognition.”

At the event, Congressman Latta presented Clyde with a flag, which was flown over the Capitol in honor and appreciation for his service to our country. Ambassador Delattre also thanked Clyde and his entire generation for their service and for liberating his country during the war.

Clyde was drafted into the military on February 9, 1942, and was stationed at Fort Bragg in North Carolina. His service is the only time he has lived outside of what is today’s Fifth Congressional District of Ohio. He served in the Ninth Infantry Division, 34th Field Artillery Battalion – one of the first to go onshore in North Africa.

During the D-Day invasion, Clyde landed on Utah Beach, from where he fought through France, Belgium and Germany. His division participated in eight major battles throughout the war.

Clyde was honorably discharged on June 21, 1945, and has remained active in the veterans community ever since. He is one of American Legion Post 225’s oldest members and has held numerous positions within the Post, including Commander and Finance Officer. He also served for 40 years on the Post’s Honor Guard and continues to serve on the Wyandot County Veteran Service Commission, of which he was selected and appointed in August 1985.
