Co-Chairmen of the Congressional French Caucus, Congressman Bob Latta (R-OH), Congressman John Campbell (R-CA), Congressman Michael Michaud (D-ME) and Congressman Adam Schiff (D-CA), released the following statement applauding the U.S. House of Representatives’ passage of S. Res. 421, a resolution recognizing the 70th Anniversary of D-Day. The resolution was introduced as an amendment to H.R. 4435, the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which the House passed today. “We are pleased the House has passed this resolution honoring the sacrifices of our World War II veterans, who participated in the largest amphibian assault the world has ever seen. We owe an enormous debt of gratitude to the ‘greatest generation,’ and this resolution rightfully recognizes their efforts to free the world from Nazi and Facist regimes and restore liberty. In passing this resolution, we will ensure the history of these events and the freedoms that resulted are passed on for generations to come.” On June 6, 1944, the Allied Forces landed on the beaches of Normandy, France, beginning the opening phase of Operation Overlord in an effort to break the Nazi stronghold on Western Europe. In that first day alone, approximately 10,000 Allied soldiers were wounded or killed, including 6,000 Americans. ### |
