Latta Supports Congressional Proposal to Protect Internet

Washington, January 20, 2015 | Sarah Criser (202-225-6405)

Congressman Bob Latta (R-OH), Vice Chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee’s Communications and Technology Subcommittee, today released the following statement in support of House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton (R-MI) and Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee Chairman John Thune’s (R-SD) proposal to protect both consumers and the Internet, while also spurring job creation and economic growth.

“The Internet is the symbol of American ingenuity and investment in the 21st Century,” said Latta. “As we work to update our communications laws, it is imperative that we protect our digital economy from excessive government overreach, while also providing consumers the protections they need. I applaud Chairmen Upton and Thune for working together to develop a proposal that will establish clear, reasonable rules for the Internet. I am also pleased that this proposal includes a provision similar to the legislation I sponsored to prevent the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) from reclassifying the Internet under Title II. I look forward to examining this proposal in further detail with my Energy and Commerce Committee colleagues at our hearing this week.”
