Latta On 5.9GHz Band Testing For Greater Unlicensed Use

Washington, January 14, 2016 | Dan Alfaro (202-225-6405)

Congressman Bob Latta (R-Ohio) issued the following statement regarding the progress made by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in its testing of 5.9GHz Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) technology.

“I am pleased to see the FCC is making progress in its coordinated efforts with the Department of Transportation in the development of vehicle-to-vehicle technologies, and examining ways to make spectrum more available for Wi-Fi. The test plan being implemented by the Commission is a good first step in providing real-world information on the safe operation of DRSC and unlicensed devices in the 5.9GHz band. I look forward to seeing future progress between the FCC and interested stakeholders to advance this important technology."

Note:
At the beginning of the 114th Congress, Latta reintroduced H.R 821, the Wi-Fi Innovation Act, bipartisan, bicameral legislation that addresses growing demand for Wi-Fi by examining ways to improve spectrum efficiency in the upper 5GHz band and maximize its use. Similar legislation, S. 424, was also introduced in the U.S. Senate by Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ).
