Propane Provisions Included in Pipeline Safety Bill

Today, the House Committee on Energy and Commerce voted to advance H.R. 5050, the Pipeline Safety Act of 2016, after adopting a bipartisan provision sponsored by Congressman Bob Latta (R-OH) and Congressman Peter Welch (D-VT) as part of the Chairman’s manager’s amendment.

The provision calls for a study by the Transportation Research Board on propane distribution systems. The study focuses on best practices relating to the design, installation, operation, and maintenance of these systems and calls for recommendations to enhance safety and coordination between federal and state regulations to ensure that safety can remain the highest priority.

“In the winter of 2013-2014 the United States experienced a devastating propane shortage across the country. As Chairman of the Congressional Propane Caucus, I have and will continue to work to ensure that we have accurate data and information that promote best practices relating to all aspects of getting propane to market,” said Latta.
