Latta Bill to Increase Transparency at the FCC Passes out of Committee

Washington, April 28, 2016 | Erin Partee (202-225-6405)

Today, the House Committee on Energy and Commerce passed legislation introduced by Congressman Bob Latta (R-Ohio), Vice-Chairman of the Subcommittee on Communications and Technology.

“My bill, H.R. 2593, would reform the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) decision-making process to hold the agency more accountable and increase transparency,” said Latta. “Specifically, the bill would require the FCC to identify and describe on its website all items to be adopted by the Commission staff on delegated authority 48 hours prior to action being taken, if those items are given a delegated authority identification number. While most of the decisions made on delegated authority are routine and minor, there are isolated incidents where the use of such authority is abused as a way to get around having the necessary votes on an item. My bill will capture those occurrences and increase public awareness of the agency’s day-to-day decisions.”

In addition, FCC Commissioner O’Rielly offered a statement in support of H.R. 2593.
