Latta Participates in Internet of Things Roundtable with Local Manufacturers

Bowling Green, OH, August 17, 2016 | Drew Griffin (202-225-6405)

Congressman Bob Latta (R-OH) joined a roundtable discussion hosted by the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) and Owens-Illinois, Inc. Wednesday morning to discuss the Internet of Things (IoT) and the impact it has on modern manufacturing. The event took place at the Headquarters of Owens-Illinois in Perrysburg, Ohio. Latta is co-chair of the House Energy and Commerce Committee’s bipartisan IoT Working Group with Congressman Peter Welch (D-VT).

“The manufacturing sector is rapidly embracing the use of the Internet of Things to improve efficiency in production,” said Latta. “Today’s roundtable discussion provided important insights into how different companies are incorporating this technology into their manufacturing process. As machinery and devices continue to become more interconnected, it’s important that federal policy encourages innovation and growth, while protecting privacy and security.”

“Connected technology and the data it is generating is revolutionizing manufacturing and we need partners in Washington to help foster its continued growth,” said National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) Director of Innovation Policy Brian Raymond. “The NAM was pleased to bring together innovative manufacturers to talk with Rep. Latta about what policies are needed to build and grow the Internet of Things (IoT). We applaud his leadership of the bipartisan IoT Working Group that will help Members of Congress better understand the technology leadership of manufacturers in Ohio and around the country.”

“The concept of the Internet of Things holds a lot of promise for companies like O-I as a way to tap into data and information that has previously been difficult or impossible to access,” said James Nester, Director, Global Manufacturing & Engineering at Owens-Illinois, Inc. “Insights from this data can provide a competitive advantage for O-I, help us operate more efficiently, and improve the value of products and services we deliver to our customers. In that way, the Internet of Things is foundational to enabling improved decision making from shop floor operator to CEO.”

The Internet of Things is technology in which physical objects and machines are embedded with Internet connectivity in order to allow them to process data and communicate in real-time with their surrounding environment. IoT can be used to gather information during the manufacturing process that can save money and resources.
