Latta Statement on Payment to Iran for American Hostages

Washington, August 19, 2016 | Drew Griffin (202-225-6405)
Congressman Bob Latta (R-Bowling Green) issued the following statement in regards to the U.S. State Department’s admission that a $400 million payment to Iran intentionally coincided with the release of four American hostages.

“By sending a $400 million payment to Iran in exchange for the release of American hostages, this Administration has essentially set a price for the return of captured Americans,” said Latta. “The President claims this was part of the negotiated nuclear agreement. However, since that deal was put into place, Iran has not improved it’s behavior when it comes to compliance with U.N. resolutions, financing terror, and respecting human rights, so why would they — or any of our enemies — stop abducting U.S. citizens when they know it’s profitable?

“To make matters worse, the Administration’s disingenuous portrayal of this payment as simply a coincidence weakens the public’s trust in our government. The unpopularity of the Iran nuclear deal continues to grow as it becomes apparent that Iran gave up essentially nothing and still have multiple paths to developing a nuclear weapon. This agreement threatens the security of our ally Israel and is threatening to cause even more instability in the Middle East.”

Last month, Congressman Latta voted for multiple pieces of legislation to hold Iran accountable for their flagrant actions. More information on those bills is available here.
