Latta Statement on President Trump’s Announcement on Iran Nuclear Deal; Decision to Reinstate Sanctions

Congressman Bob Latta (R-Bowling Green) has released the following statement after President Trump announced that the United States will leave the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and reinstate sanctions on Iran.

“President Obama’s Iran Nuclear Deal was flawed from the very start. Without getting much of anything in return, Iran was given access to billions of dollars, sanctions relief, and the ability to kickstart their nuclear program after only ten years. Their behavior has not improved because of this agreement, and in many ways, it has gotten worse. They’ve been a destabilizing force in the region, playing a large role in civil wars in Syria and Yemen that have cost hundreds of thousands of lives. They are still the world’s largest state sponsor of terrorism.

“Because of bipartisan opposition to the Obama Administration’s deal in 2015, the JCPOA was never ratified as a treaty, which meant future Presidents were free to leave the agreement. President Trump made that decision today to withdraw from the JCPOA and reinstate sanctions on Tehran. I support this action. We need a solution that prevents Iran from having a pathway to nuclear weapons and holds them accountable for their destabilizing actions.”
