Congressman Bob Latta (R-Bowling Green) has introduced legislation, the Veterans Right to Expediency Act, to ensure that veterans are informed in a timely manner of the outcome of their Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) disability claim. Latta had recently met with members of his Veterans Advisory Group who expressed concern that delayed delivery of notifications was causing veterans to miss the window to submit an appeal. According to members of the Veterans Advisory Group, the VA stated it was issues with the United State Postal Service that resulted in the delivery issues. The Veterans Right to Expediency Act would require that all VA denial of claims for benefits notices be delivered by certified mail.

“Ensuring our veterans receive the benefits they deserve is important to me,” said Latta. “It’s completely unacceptable that a veteran could lose their ability to appeal because bureaucratic mistakes meant they hadn’t received notification that their claim had been denied. Sending these notifications by certified mail will make sure that they are made aware of their claim outcome in a timely manner. I would like to thank the Veterans Service Organization representatives who participate in my Veterans Advisory Group for bringing this problem to my attention.”
