Latta Statement on the Funeral of President George H.W. Bush

Washington, December 5, 2018 | Drew Griffin (202-225-6405)

Congressman Bob Latta (R-Bowling Green) released the following statement after attending the funeral of President George H.W. Bush in Washington, D.C.

“Today, we said goodbye to President George H.W. Bush with stories and memories of his humility, his love of family, and his service to our nation. Historian and author Jon Meacham couldn’t have been more right when he called him a ‘20th century founding father.’ When his son, President George W. Bush spoke, we heard from the rare American that knows the feeling of being the son of a President and also the demands of the office itself. His reverence for his father was clear, and we were all moved by his description of the reunion occurring now between President Bush, Barbara – his wife of 73 years, and Robin – their young daughter who lost her life to leukemia.

“Family was central to the 41st President’s life. I had the opportunity to serve as a driver for President Bush when he came to Northwest Ohio for an event with my father in 1978. I remember their conversations and the way he spoke of his family and cherished them. It’s a memory I’ll never forget.

“The legacy of George Herbert Walker Bush, as it is with all Presidents, will be discussed for decades to come. We’ll leave those thoughts for the future. This day, and this week, were about honoring the man. A man who heroically fought for his country as a young Navy pilot in World War II, a committed public servant, a devoted husband, and a loving father. As a nation we mourn his loss, but celebrate his remarkable life.”
