Today, Congressman Bob Latta (R-OH5) provided the following statement applauding the President for signing the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) into law: “Ohioans from the Fifth Congressional District have told me how important it is to their farms, businesses, and communities to modernize our trade agreements so that we are no longer getting the short end of the deal. There are a number of reasons why everyone should be praising this action today. Most notably, the USMCA will create 176,000 new American jobs and grow our economy by over $68 billion. Increasing access to foreign markets is essential to growing the U.S. economy and creating good-paying jobs. Furthermore, there are more than 3 million jobs nationwide that are supported by the Internet, and the USMCA is the first free trade agreement to include a section on digital commerce. “International trade is critical to my home state of Ohio. Canada is Ohio’s largest trading partner, and we need to foster that relationship to support farmers and consumers. Once Canada ratifies the USMCA, Canada and Mexico will have to provide for a transparent and timely application and approval process for U.S. crops using biotechnology. I am proud that with the USMCA, we are even closer to bringing North American trade into the 21st Century and creating a brighter future for farmers, manufacturers, and businesses across the country.” ### |
