Latta Supports Bills to Keep Memorials Open and Provide Funding for NIH

Washington, DC, October 2, 2013 | Laura Strange (202-225-6405)

Congressman Bob Latta (R-Bowling Green) today voted in favor of two funding bills, Open Our National Parks and Museum Act (H.J. Res. 70), which will provide funding for the National Parks Service, and Research for Lifesaving Cures Act (H.J. Res. 73), to provide funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Congressman Latta released the following statement shortly after the passage of these bills:

“The bills brought to the House Floor tonight are bills that reflect issues we can all agree on – that our nation’s memorials, museums, and national parks should continue to be funded. Right now, many veterans are wondering whether or not they will be able to see their war memorials when they come to visit our nation’s capital. The Obama Administration should never have closed them, they are stationed in open spaces, and the barricades should be removed. It is up to the Senate now to ensure all Americans can enjoy our war memorials, museums and national parks.

“Another issue that I believe we can all agree on is that the NIH does important work to research lifesaving cures for some of our nation’s sickest patients, and it should be funded. I joined with my colleagues to support these two measures tonight. House Republicans have acted multiple times to resolve the government shutdown, and we will continue working towards passing solutions to fix this situation.”

H.J. Res. 73 passed the House by a vote of 254 to 171.

H.J. Res 70 passed the House by a vote of 252 to 173.
