Congressman Latta on the Advanced Nuclear Technology Development Act of 2016

Today, the House Committee on Energy and Commerce voted unanimously to advance the Advanced Nuclear Technology Development Act of 2016 (H.R. 4979), bipartisan legislation introduced by Congressman Bob Latta (R-OH) and Congressman Jerry McNerney (D-CA). H.R. 4979 now awaits consideration by the full House of Representatives.

“H.R. 4979 is Congress’s opportunity to ensure that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is able to provide the certainty that the private sector needs to invest in innovative advanced nuclear reactor technologies,” said Latta. “Nuclear power is clean and reliable baseload power, and must be part of the United States’ future electricity mix. Investment in new technologies is already happening, with approximately 50 companies in this country working to develop the next generation of nuclear power.

“The United States must remain a leader in the nuclear industry, which is vital for both our electricity generation mix and our national security. I am pleased that the committee has supported H.R. 4979 and I look forward to working to have H.R. 4979 passed into law.”
