Latta: Police Week an Opportunity to Recognize the Service of Law Enforcement

Congressman Bob Latta (R-Bowling Green) is recognizing the service and sacrifice of our country’s law enforcement officers during National Police Week. Established by a joint resolution in 1962, National Police Week includes ceremonies in Washington D.C. to honor and remember fallen police officers. In the U.S. House of Representatives, Congressman Latta helped pass five pieces of legislation to support law enforcement officers.

Those bills were:

H.R. 4854 – Justice Served Act – Provides funding for grants to ensure that state and local law enforcement has the capacity to prosecute sexual assault crimes.
H.R. 613 – Lieutenant Osvaldo Albarati Correctional Officer Self-Protection Act – Allows correctional officers to store firearms in lockers on prison grounds in order to protect themselves to and from work.
H.Res. 285 – Expresses a sense of the U.S. House of Representatives that Congress and the President should empower the creation of police and community alliances to improve communication and collaboration between memebrs of the law enforcement community and the public they serve.
H.R. 1417 – National Law Enforcement Museum Exhibits Act – Allows the National Law Enforcement Museum, which is privately operated on Federal land in Washington, D.C., to acquire firearms for display in the museum exhibits.
H.R. 5698 – Protect and Serve Act – Allows federal prosecution of those who knowingly cause or attempt to cause significant bodily injury to any law enforcement officer.

“The men and women of law enforcement put their lives on the line to keep our communities safe,” said Latta. “It’s important that we support the work they do to serve and protect communities across the country every single day. I’ve often joined law enforcement in Ohio for ride-alongs, and the officers can be counted on to carry out their duties with professionalism and purpose.

“That’s why the House passed legislation this week like the Protect and Serve Act, which will allow Federal prosecutions for intentional attacks on police officers. In light of recent ambush attacks on police officers, we need to keep in mind the dangers that law enforcement face on a daily basis.”
