Congressman Bob Latta (R-Bowling Green) issued the following statement regarding today’s 2-1 ruling from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) must resume its consideration of the Department of Energy's license application for Yucca Mountain: “Hardworking American taxpayers have already expended $15 billion developing the Yucca Mountain site in Nevada. This administration’s continued delay led to 78 utilities recently filing lawsuits against the Department of Energy to recover the costs of storing used nuclear fuel. This has resulted in $2.6 billion worth of claims being paid out of the Department of Treasury’s judgment fund and recent estimates suggest that future claims will increase taxpayer liability to $19.7 billion through 2020. This is an inexcusable and costly delay. Today’s long-awaited decision will ensure that the NRC can no longer skirt their statutory responsibilities and will prevent billions of taxpayer dollars from being wasted.”
