Latta Highlights Sky-High Optimism for American Manufacturing at E&C Subcommittee Hearing

Nikki Moyers of Perrysburg’s Jerl Machine testifies about benefits of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act

Washington, September 26, 2018 | Drew Griffin (202-225-6405)
Congressman Bob Latta (R-Bowling Green) highlighted the benefits that pro-growth policies are playing for manufacturers at an Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Digital Commerce and Consumer Protection (DCCP) hearing today. The hearing, entitled, ‘Built in America: Jobs and Growth in the Manufacturing Sector,’ also heard from Nikki Moyers, VP of Operations at Perrysburg’s Jerl Machine. The subcommittee is chaired by Latta and has oversight over policies affecting manufacturers.

Latta opened the hearing by saying, “Thanks to policies designed to spur manufacturing in our country we are seeing a revival of the Made in America brand. Factories are expanding, workers are being hired and re-hired and wages are rising. A recent survey of small business owners found optimism at an all-time high. Small businesses are responsible for creating two out of every three new jobs so when they are raising wages, growing their businesses, and investing in equipment, it’s helpful to the entire economy.”

Moyers testified that, “In the past year, Jerl has seen a production resurgence unprecedented in its 45 year history. Our core customers are sending in more purchase orders than ever. We are hearing from companies that haven’t done work with us for over a decade and more and more new opportunities are surfacing. Our suppliers are just as busy, proving that our good fortune is not unique in this industry. I attribute much of this upswing to the passing of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act late last year and specifically its provision to cut corporate taxes. We are on the right track to have our highest sales and highest profit of any year on record for 2018. Jerl has been able to give much deserved wage raises to our employees. Its already paid out two separate bonuses to all of our employees and has another planned for late November. We’ve also added three machines to our shop floor to help with our orders.”

Jerl Machine was created in 1975 and provides precision metalworking and machining for a diverse group of industrial and manufacturing customers. Latta toured their facility in August to see the work they are doing up close.

A booming economy and the passage of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act has led to a resurgence in American manufacturing of late. According to a survey by the National Association of Manufacturers, 95.1% of manufacturers have a positive outlook for their companies – an all-time high.
